Faith is out of Control

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1

The basis of faith in the Christian life removes all control of our eternal destiny.

To live by faith is to live out of control.

To live by faith is to surrender.

To live by faith is to die.

When you live by what you do, you have control. You can choose to make a good decision or a bad one, do a kind thing or a mean one. You can be fairly certain what the result of your choices will be.

Yet we know that we can't control our eternal destiny, anyway. We know that our good works are as filthy rags before Holy God. We know that we are chasing after the wind.

Our faith is what saves us.

But no, God's grace is what saves us.

Because faith is a doorway. Faith opens the door to let in the grace of God.

And faith recognizes that our whole life is in His hands. From beginning to end.

There's nothing we can do but surrender.

Faith is out of control.

And here's the thing: it is only by God's grace that we can have faith to understand God's grace that gives us grace to have faith to comprehend the grace of God.

I will walk by faith.

Thank you, Jesus.

I am completely dependent on You.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God...
Ephesians 2:8

  6. I echo your "I will walk by faith -- living dependent on Jesus." Faith opens so many doors. I've found that I must do more than just mimic the words. Faith comes from knowing God.Then the amazement I find in who He makes it easy for faith to grow.

  7. Completely dependant, and although at times that feels difficult and terrifying, mostly it just feels so comforting.

  8. A difficult part of faith is when you do live in faith (beyond normal worldly faith) and those who are your loudest detractors are those who profess faith. I liked your post. I hope many take it to heart.

  11. Amen! And thank you for the reminder of the wild, unexpected, and out of control side of faith. I agree with Inez--what a great statement! Our family has been reminded continually this year, that striving to follow Christ isn't always safe and predictable, but it is good!
